U15/U18 Boys Provincial Program

Field Hockey Alberta Boys program

The FHAHPP boys program is for athletes between the age of 10 and 18 years old. The goal of the program is to motivate and help young athletes to make the first steps in becoming a field hockey high performance athlete. By using a structured training-plan and enthusiastic coaches FHA believes the players will be given the chance to utilize their talents and by that giving them the opportunity to develop to the maximum of their ability.

The program specifically focuses on the following field hockey training fundamentals:

  • Discipline and fitness
  • Basic individual skill
  • Strong defensive base
  • Tactical awareness

These training fundamentals are divided over the 4 programs during the year (fall program, winter program, early spring program and the nationals program). Where discipline and fitness is a key point over the entire year the other three fundamentals are divided over the first 3 programs. During the final program (Nationals program) all of the skills will be combined to have a maximum performance during the Field Hockey Canada Provincial Nationals.

FHA HPP Selection process

The FHA HPP only has space for a maximum of 25 athletes per group. This means if there are more than 25 players at tryouts for the program there will be a selection. The provincial team is an open selection, this means athletes may be added during the entire program. Playing in a program does not guarantee a spot on the nationals travel team although attendance in the different programs will be taken in consideration.

 FHA HPP Attendance policy

FHA and the FHA athletes both put in a lot of effort to maximise the individual development of the player. Training and playing in the provincial team means you’re committing yourself to a program.

FHA HPP Fitness policy

FHA aims to develop each player to the best they can be. This involves helping athletes develop in a holistic sense through not only technical and tactical development, but through a focus on areas such as lifestyle, mental skills and nutritional elements. Part of this commitment includes physiological development; the development of fitness abilities. High performance athletes need to learn how to train.

Fitness in the game of field hockey is just as important as passing and receiving, scoring, tackling, making saves and playing well. Fitness is central to an athlete’s success in playing this sport, both in the short and long term. Fitness also helps an athlete maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, minimizing and preventing injuries.

Nationals program

The fourth and final program from the year is the Nationals Program. This program is also a development program, but there will be more focus on the actual perforce as athletes are working their way up to the national championship. More information about the nationals program and the selection criteria will follow soon!
