Gold Medal Match Report

Astros 3 – 0 Red Deer Storm
Umpires: Austin Paquette and Lauren Perry

After the exciting and hard fought round robin games, Astros and Red Deer Storm made it to the Final of the U18 Girls’ Provincial Club Championship at Hawkings Turf, UofC. Both teams met earlier that day in the round robin and Astros took the 3-0 win, despite Red Deer Storm having a couple of good chances to even the score line.

The Final Gold Medal game saw Red Deer Storm dominate for the first 15 minutes, pressing into their opposition’s 23m area and circle, playing some skilful and exciting field hockey. The experienced Astros defence were confident and calm, led by Nicole White and kept them out of danger. Astros had a quick free hit which led to the ball being passed into the attacking circle and then rebounded from the Red Deer GK where a number of players scrambled to clear the ball but it was an accurate one touch from Toni Dawson who secured Astros first goal in the 17th minute.

Astros took control and had a succession of Penalty Corners but to no avail as the Red Deer Storm defence players, Jenna St Pierre and Abigail Ward were quick to pressure the shots. In the 24th minute Astros regained their confidence with a goal from Lucy Beauregard when her first time shot deflected off the defenders stick into the goal for Astros to lead 2-0.

The second half started tentatively with both teams just holding on to the ball and playing it wide up the side lines. Both teams were cheered on loudly by their supporters and picked it up a notch producing strong attacking midfield play. Emily Smith and Fredie Samori had some good chemistry on the right for Astros, confident in their pass and go options, and led to a number of penalty corners. These came to nought as the Storm defended well, and twice broke quickly upfield with clever, one-touch passes splitting the Astros defence, leading to chances at the other end, where Kim Scott needed to make a couple of smart saves. Red Deer Storm were unlucky not to create more chances as playmaker Jordyn Burgar distributed the ball well to her forward line but her teammates began to run out of steam to make and real come back from being 2 goals down.

In the 48th minute Astros took charge from a quick interception by Avery Vadnai in the midfield, passing the ball out wide to Sage Lietz and the ball entered the circle to the left post to be then sweetly touched high into the goal by the Astros forward Sandi Dawson to make the final score 3-0.
